“Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.”

I am working in an International pre-school in Asia at the German Language program. We have children from all over the world. Many kids with parents from different nationalities and backgrounds. Some children only attend my German language program part time so the main focus for me is to keep fun and motivation in the class even when children might not talk a lot as others or their understanding of the new language is limited.
We 'celebrate' differences in our school by offering different language programs lead by native speakers (German, French). Children have the opportunity in these classes to learn a new language but also to celebrate festivals and events that are important for that country. (e.g. Christmas, Eastern...)
We also do celebrating an annual 'International Week' where every class in school has to chose one country around the world they represent with its costumes, music, dances or traditions. Every country is performing in front of all families, school staff and school peers various dance performances on the last day our international week, so that others get in touch other countries as well.
We also have a flag parade where all children can wear the clothes and costumes of their mother country. All children can see that all children are coming from different countries but can be friends without borders.
We also celebrating 'Bookweek' once a year where parents can come in and read their favorite children book in their mother tongue. Even if not all children understand the stories they are exposed to different language and cultures. Children love it to invite their parents for reading out of their books.
All children have different backgrounds and mother tongues and all have the opportunity to play and learn together with other kids from around the world. They get a feeling of a variety of cultures and languages and they learn tolerance and acceptance from the start.
School parents and children are meeting for play-dates outside of school or for mother afternoons where they can all benefit from different cultures and share ideas and experiences.
I love working in an International school with all odds and ends :-)
